SSHL 2012-2013

SSHL Logo

Good morning hockey fans. We wanted to provide a brief update about the status of our fantasy hockey league, the SSHL. Due to the uncertainty surrounding the National Hockey League’s 2012-2013 season the Sunshine State Hockey League will be canceled for 2012-2013. We will however host a special playoff edition of the SSHL as long as there is not a full season lockout in the NHL.

More details will be released on March 1st, 2013.

SSHL LogoThe 2011-2012 National Hockey League regular season has come to a close which means the inaugural season of the Sunshine State Hockey League is finished. This Week In Fantasy Hockey

PKane

It’s been a busy week in the NHL with a number of big games as well as big individual efforts by some top names around the league. Lets jump right into the list shall we?

Trending upward

1. Patrick Kane Chi – (4GP 2G 5A) Kane has started to heat up and proving why he was taken #1 overall in 2007 recording 2g and an assist against Nashville, an assist against Florida, and tallying 3 assists the next night in Tampa. Also finishing the week with an impressive +5 rating.

2. Nicklas Backstrom Wsh – (4GP 3G 5A) Backstrom, who started the season out slow recording 2g 8a in his teams first 8GP (impressive for a guy ‘slumping’ isn’t it?), recorded 8pts in the past 4 games including the game tying goal and OT GWG in a thrilling game against Anaheim.

3. Pekka Rinne Nsh – (4GP 3-0-1 2SO) After signing a 7 year $49m contract on his birthday Rinne proved why he was worth the money shutting out Anaheim. He finishes the week with a GAA just under 2.00 and a .937 sv%.

Honorable Mention

Adam Henrique NJD – (3GP 3G 2A), Tyler Seguin BOS – (3GP 4G 1A)

Trending Downward

1. Brendan Morrison CGY – (3GP 0G 0A 5SOG) Missed the first 5 games of the season and since returning to his team has yet to register a point in 8 games.

2. Dustin Penner LAK – (3GP 0G 0A 3SOG) Zero points in his last 8 games and only one assist on the season (11 games).

3. Ryan Miller BUF – Only played in a grand total of 6:23 last week and in that time surrendered 3 goals. Winless in his last 3 games everyone is questioning “What happened?!” to this former Vezina trophy winner.

Honorable Mention

Kyle Okposo NYI – (3GP 0G 1A -3), Scottie Upshall FLA – (3GP 0G 0A -2)

Players to watch this upcoming week

1. Danny Briere PHI – Back from injury he looks to pick up where he left off and wants to continue to stockpile the points.

2. Ryan Getzlaf ANA – Hasn’t had his typical dominating season on Anaheim’s top line but he’s a competitor and will be looking to turn it around.

3. Kris Versteeg FLA – Has admitted to being frustrated not being able to find the back of the net lately yet he still continues to slowly rack up points on Florida’s top line. Look for him to net a couple of goals and get back into the swing of things.

Fantasy Hockey Update

Sunday, October 16th marked the end of the first week in Fantasy Hockey, and what an exciting week it has been! Some surprises emerged whether it be from starting out strong or slow offensively, putting on a goaltending clinic, or letting just about every shot faced fly in. I’m here to point out some of the “stars” from the first week as well as some of the disappointments, and to provide a list of players to consider trading for at some point.

Trending Upward:

1. Phil Kessel TOR – (5g 3a 8pts +7): Kessel is my pick for the top player trending upward this past week. Strong goaltending caused Toronto to post a 3-0-0 record during the first week which usually results in confidence from forwards. If it keeps up look for Kessel to have a career season.

2. John Tavares NYI – (5g 3a 8pts): Tavares posted back to back 4 point nights last week along with his first hat trick of the season. The Islanders are starting out strong and again look for the forwards to feed off of this and raise the intensity of their play.

3. Joffrey Lupul TOR – (3g 2a 5pts): Lupul is benefiting from the strong play of Kessel as seen in his numbers. You can expect to see a career season from him if it keeps up. Keep an eye on him!

4. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins EDM – (4g 0a 4pts): This years first overall pick has made the decision tough on the coaching staff on whether to send him back to juniors after the first 9 games. Strong play along with Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle has boosted his value greatly this past week and I expect good things from him. How can you turn down a kid who scored a hat trick in just his third NHL game?

Notable players to watch this week: Kris Versteeg FLA – 3GP 1G 2A 3PT, Marc-Andre Bergeron TBL – 5GP 2G 3A 5PT, James Neal PIT – 6GP 5G 1A 6PT, Thomas Vanek BUF – 4GP 3G 4A 7PT, Al Montoya NYI – 2-1 1.35GAA .953S%, James Reimer Tor – 3-0 2.49GAA .917S%

Trending Downward:

1. Dwayne Roloson TBL – (3GP 1-1-1 5.09GAA .858S%): Roloson is off to a shaky start and it’s apparent in the Lightning’s record, look for Mathieu Garon to get more starts in an attempt to shake things up.

2. David Booth FLA – (3GP 0G 1A 1P -3): Booth is a surprise on this list as he was expected to be among Florida top forwards this season, but his slow start is proving otherwise.

3. Steven Stamkos TBL – (5GP 2G 1A 3PT): The leading goal scorer in the NHL the past two season is off to a slow start like the rest of his team, and unless something drastic is done to shake the team up he may not break out of the “slump” this week.

Players to look out for in the coming weeks:

Taylor Hall EDM - Top line is gaining momentum and he looks to benefit from it.

Anaheim’s Top Line - Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan all started out slow but look for all three of these players to heat up.

Rick Nash CBJ - With Jeff Carter out for possibly a few weeks look for Nash to step up and help his team turn around from one of it’s worst starts in history.

Sidney Crosby PIT - Nobody knows the timetable on Crosby’s return but he was cleared for contact this past week which only means he’s one step closer to that day, so watch out for his return and be ready to have him in your lineup!
